About the examination in general
WHEN IS IT RECOMMENDED?
- In case of complaints of the digestive system (esophagus, stomach, small and large bowels): swallowing complaints, difficulty in swallowing, gastric and abdominal pain, stomach cramps, diarrhea and changes in stool pattern and bloody stool.
- For the clarification of certain disorders of the urinary system.
- For the assessment of the permeability of the fallopian tubes in certain cases of infertility.
FOR WHAT AGE GROUP?
For all age groups, suggested by a specialist.
HOW OFTEN IS IT RECOMMENDED?
Depending on the general health status, complaints and possible risk factors. In reasonable cases, for follow-up purposes according to the decision of the referring physician.
DOES IT HAVE ANY RISKS?
Images are acquired by X-ray that is associated with radiation exposure to the patient. However, with proper indication, the information content of the examination is more beneficial for the patient health than the risk of radiation exposure that is our intention and duty to minimize as much as possible. The intravenous administration of contrast materials necessary in certain contrast enhanced examinations may have minimal side-effects (e.g. slight flush, warm feeling etc.).
HOW TO REQUEST AN EXAMINATION?
Referral of a physician is necessary for the examination. In our private consultation it is also possible to perform an examination without referral, according to our price list. In this case the written recommendation of a physician is also necessary.
DOES IT HAVE ANY SIDE-EFFECTS?
Side effects due to the intravenous contrast material used in certain examinations only occur in less than 0.01 – 0.5% of the cases.
WHEN DO I GET MY RESULTS?
The patient will receive the findings right after the examination.
BOOKING TIME?
- With referral, covered by the social security it is 1-2 weeks.
- For paying patient it is less than 1-2 days!
FURTHER CONTRAST ENHANCED X-RAY EXAMNINATIONS
- Contrast swallow examination
- Contrast examination of the stomach
- Contrast examination of the small bowel
- Contrast examination of the large bowel
- Contrast examination of the urinary system
- Determination of the permeability of the fallopian tubes
Contrast swallow examination
HOW IS THE EXAMINATION PERFORMED?
The patient should remove his or her clothes and necklaces as well (best left home) before the swallow examination. During the examination the patient should swallow thick or diluted contrast material in a standing position, whilst on the monitor of the fluoroscope the physician analyses the swallowing process, the esophagus folds and the passage of the contrast material.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
On the average 15-20 minutes.
WILL IT BE PAINFUL?
It doesn’t come with any pain.
WHEN DO I GET MY RESULTS?
The patient will receive the findings right after the examination.
BOOKING TIME?
- With referral, covered by the social security it is 1-2 weeks.
- For paying patient it is 1-2 days.
Contrast examination of the stomach
HOW IS THE EXAMINATION PERFORMED?
The examination is performed in a standing and recumbent position. The patient will be asked to drink approximately 2-3 L of liquid barium contrast material in a defined time and may also receive gas-forming fizzy powder.
WHAT TO DO BEFORE THE EXAMINATION?
The patient should be fasting in the morning of the examination. We kindly ask the patient not to smoke 1 hour prior to the examination to prevent excessive formation of gastric juice.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
It normally takes around 15-20 minutes.

Contrast examination of the small bowel
HOW IS THE EXAMINATION PERFORMED?
The examination can be performed in a standing and also in recumbent position (in patients with poor health status). The patient will be asked to drink approximately 4-5 L of liquid Barium contrast material in standing and in recumbent positions facing towards and turned away from the X-ray source. The physician analyses the passage of the contrast material in given time intervals.
In certain cases it may be necessary to directly administer the contrast material into the small bowel through a nasojejunal tube introduced into the first small bowel loop. In this case, the first part of the introduction of the probe may be inconvenient.
WHAT TO DO BEFORE THE EXAMINATION?
The patient should be fasting in the morning of the examination. We kindly ask the patient not to smoke 1 hour before the examination to prevent excessive formation of gastric juice.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
Depending on the stomach excretion and bowel movements of the patient. On the average it takes 1-1.5 hours. Of course, it doesn’t mean a continuous examination; it is partly the time necessary for the excretion of the stomach and bowels.
WILL IT BE PAINFUL?
It doesn’t come with any pain.
WHEN DO I GET MY RESULTS?
The patient will receive the results right after the examination.
BOOKING TIME?
- With referral, covered by the social security it is 1-2 weeks.
- For paying patient it is 1-2 days!
Contrast examination of the large bowel
HOW IS THE EXAMINATION PERFORMED?
The examination is performed in recumbent position. The approximately 5-6 L of liquid Barium contrast material is administered through a tube introduced into the rectum. The liquid contrast material is tracked through the whole large bowel, and then air is introduced to fully fill the large bowel. During and after filling the large bowel, images are taken and the position, permeability, spaciousness and wall of the bowel are evaluated.
WHAT TO DO BEFORE THE EXAMINATION?
Cleaning of the bowel is necessary for the successful examination. A humane way of this is if the patient, after having a light breakfast on the day before the examination, won’t eat anything. While consuming a material for this purpose called X-Prep or Fleet-Phosphosoda and a lot of filtered, gas-free fluid. If necessary, an enema may be performed in the morning before the examination.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
It will take about 25-30 minutes.
WILL IT BE PAINFUL?
It doesn’t come with any pain.
WHEN DO I GET MY RESULTS?
The patient will receive the findings right after the examination.
BOOKING TIME?
- With referral, covered by the social security it is 1-2 weeks.
- For paying patient it is 1-2 days!
Contrast examination of the urinary system
HOW IS THE EXAMINATION PERFORMED?
It can only be performed for the recommendation of an urologist. The examination is performed in recumbent position. One possible way is to acquire images between certain time intervals of the kidneys and urinary tract, after intravenous contrast material administration. This method (intravenous urography) has been widely replaced by the CT and MR urography, as these solutions provide substantially more information.
In certain cases, it may be necessary to fill the urinary tract with contrast material backwards from the bladder to depict the urinary system. This examination is performed under sterile conditions and fluoroscopic control.
WHAT TO DO BEFORE THE EXAMINATION?
The patients need to fast before the examination.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
60 minutes on average.
WILL IT BE PAINFUL?
The examination is more inconvenient than painful.
WHEN DO I GET MY RESULTS?
The patient will receive the findings right after the examination.
BOOKING TIME?
- With referral, covered by the social security it is 2 weeks.
- For paying patient it is 3-4 days.
Determination of the permeability of the fallopian tubes
HOW IS THE EXAMINATION PERFORMED?
It can only be performed for the recommendation of a gynecologist. This examination is performed in recumbent position under sterile conditions and fluoroscopic control. The obstetric-gynecologist administers the contrast material into the cervix with an appropriate instrument. The contrast material enters the womb and then the fallopian tubes, confirming their permeability. Passage of the contrast material is tracked on the screen of the fluoroscope.
WHAT TO DO BEFORE THE EXAMINATION?
The patients need to fast before the examination.
DURATION OF THE EXAMINATION?
20-30 minutes on the average.
WILL IT BE PAINFUL?
The examination is inconvenient but it is without considerable pain.
WHEN DO I GET THE FINDING OF THE EXAMINATION?
The patient will receive the finding right after the examination.
BOOKING TIME?

Price
Imaging diagnostic examinations are performed for persons with social security, continously paying contributions and allowances or have a valid legal relationship for any other reason in Hungary on the expense of the social insuracnce (SI). The majority of patients makes use of our services as ambulatory care, i.e. as an out-patients. Out-patient examinations have been readily financed by the SI to a certain extent only and this is far less than the real demand would require. With regard to the fact that examinations above this limit are not financed by the SI, most health care instituations and providers – and so do we – take measures to book our examinations. We perform the appropriate amount of monthly financed examinations after summarizing the bookings. But since the demand for imaging diagnostic examination if much higher than what the above limit permits, in some cases patients have to wait for certain examinations several weeks, even months. Naturally, this waiting time doesn’t apply for urgent examinations. Applying an urgent examination is the duty of the referral doctor, after coinsidering the patient’s health status and in the cases of the clinical status of “urgent demand” defined by the law. Inpatient examinations are imaging diagnostic examinations for patients staying permanently in health care institutaions. Theoretically there isn’t any limit for examinations of this type. If the doctor of the inpatient decides that imaging diagnostic examination is necessary for the patient, this still will be performed on the day of such request. In every case the adequately filled out referral and the valid SSN number (social security number) is needed before performing the examination.
The validity of social insurance legal relationship has to be checked in case of every patient.
