X-ray examination

WHEN IS IT RECOMMENDED?

  • In case of bone and joint pain
  • suspicion of bone injury
  • certain chest and abdominal complaints.

FOR WHAT AGE GROUP?

In reasonable cases it can be performed for all age-groups.

HOW OFTEN IS IT RECOMMENDED?

Only upon the recommendation of a physician, depending on the symptoms. In diagnosed cases follow-up is in accordance with the professional rules (traumatology, orthopedic surgery, pulmonology etc.).

DOES IT HAVE ANY RISKS?

During X-ray examinations ionizing radiation is used that may have harmful effects on the body. However, with proper indication, the information content of the examination is more beneficial for the patient health than the risk of the radiation exposure. On behalf of minimizing the radiation exposure, our Department emphasizes the radiation protection of the patients and workers ordered by the law.

HOW TO REQUEST AN EXAMINATION?

Examinations can only be performed with referral of a physician, with booking or immediately in case of an emergency.

DOES IT HAVE ANY SIDE-EFFECTS?

There are no immediate side-effects of the examination.

HOW IS THE EXAMINATION PERFORMED?

Depending on the desired examination, the patient is instructed to remove his or her clothes and takes a seat in the examination room. The examination can be performed in a standing (e.g. chest X-ray), sitting (e.g. wrist X-ray) or in recumbent (e.g. hip or spine X-ray) position. The patient is then positioned. The body parts not to be examined are covered with a lead apron for the radiation protection. The assistant places a cassette/detector next to the body part to be examined, and turns the X-ray tube facing the cassette that is in 1-1.5m distance from the body part. The assistant leaves the examination room for the time of the exposure (a few seconds), but will stay in contact with the patient through a window.

Most examinations are performed motionless, holding the breath during exposure. After exposure the cassette is developed (1.5 minutes) or the image is sent from the detector to the workstation. The image is then inspected by the radiologist specialist. Meanwhile the patient is waiting in the examination room. If the physician finds the examination successful, the assistant will inform the patient that he or she can leave the examination room. However additional records may be taken if necessary.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE THE EXAMINATION?

The examinations don’t require any preparation at home. The patient may eat or drink. The regularly used medications should be administered. Right before the examination, clothes and accessories containing metal (necklace, earrings, watch etc.) should be removed from the body part to be examined.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

It depends on the requested number of images. One exposure is ready in a split of a second, however altogether it may take 5-15 minutes because of the preparation, the adjustments and the visualization of the image.

WILL IT BE PAINFUL?

It doesn’t come with any pain.

WHEN DO I GET MY RESULTS?

The patient will receive the finding right after the examination.

BOOKING TIME?

  • With referral, covered by the social security it takes at least 1 month.
  • For paying patient it is less than 1-2 days!

Imaging diagnostic examinations are performed for persons with social security, continously paying contributions and allowances or have a valid legal relationship for any other reason in Hungary on the expense of the social insuracnce (SI). The majority of patients makes use of our services as ambulatory care, i.e. as an out-patients. Out-patient examinations have been readily financed by the SI to a certain extent only and this is far less than the real demand would require. With regard to the fact that examinations above this limit are not financed by the SI, most health care instituations and providers – and so do we – take measures to book our examinations. We perform the appropriate amount of monthly financed examinations after summarizing the bookings. But since the demand for imaging diagnostic examination if much higher than what the above limit permits, in some cases patients have to wait for certain examinations several weeks, even months. Naturally, this waiting time doesn’t apply for urgent examinations. Applying an urgent examination is the duty of the referral doctor, after coinsidering the patient’s health status and in the cases of the clinical status of “urgent demand” defined by the law. Inpatient examinations are imaging diagnostic examinations for patients staying permanently in health care institutaions. Theoretically there isn’t any limit for examinations of this type. If the doctor of the inpatient decides that imaging diagnostic examination is necessary for the patient, this still will be performed on the day of such request. In every case the adequately filled out referral and the valid SSN number (social security number) is needed before performing the examination.
The validity of social insurance legal relationship has to be checked in case of every patient.
